What is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s Foot is an infectious disease caused by a fungus between the toes, which can also affect the toenails or infect other body parts. Tinea pedis infection is the scientific name for Athlete’s Foot fungal infection. It is contagious by contact with contaminated surfaces or objects.

Despite its name, you don’t have to be an athlete to get Athlete’s Foot. Contagion causes symptoms such as burning, irritation, redness, and soreness. In addition, hot weather, closed shoes, and socks that do not absorb sweat well can cause even more damage or trigger other ways of manifestation.

What are the types of Athlete’s Foot?

The most common manifestation is “Interdigital,” when the fungus lodges between the toes and can spread to other toes.

There is also the so-called “Moccasin,” which occurs on the heel, sole, and sides of the feet. In this case, the skin becomes thick, inflamed, and may peel.

Its last manifestation is “Vesicular,” which causes blisters and sores on the sole and instep of the Foot.

How to treat it?

Treatment is usually straightforward, with topical antifungal medication prescribed by a doctor. However, in more severe cases, oral antifungal medication prescribed by a specialist may be necessary.

Taking proper care of your feet is essential if Athlete’s Foot appears.

How to prevent it?

It’s simple:

  • Avoid wearing damp socks;
  • Wear flip-flops in public places, such as gyms and pools;
  • It’s important to properly dry the spaces between your toes after getting them wet so they don’t stay moist for too long;
  • Do not wear tight shoes. Your toes need enough space to move inside your shoes.

Avoid tight shoes.

If you suffer from Athlete’s Foot, it is crucial to see a doctor and understand the best treatment to eliminate this fungal infection once and for all!
